If someone were to ask about some of the greatest military exploits in modern history, historians might point to the Battle of Midway, which took place in June of 1942, and which helped “turn the tide” in the war in the Pacific. Others might suggest it was General MacArthur’s brilliant strategy of landing troops at Inchon, and thus flanking the North Koreans in September of 1950. Certainly one of the most amazing feats in the annals of warfare was the Battle of Britain from June through September of 1940, when Great Britain stood alone against the onslaught of the German Luftwaffe. British pilots, joined by volunteers from America, Canada, France and Poland, contended against a vastly numerical force of enemy aircraft. The personal sacrifice by these brave young pilots prompted Prime Minister Winston Churchill to proclaim before the House of Commons saying: “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.” Read more...
