I’ve shared with you before that one of my father’s proudest moments was when I was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army upon graduating from college. Webster’s Dictionary defines commissioning as the “state of being sanctioned to perform specified duties.” It goes on to say that commissioning is “the authorization to perform certain duties and/or to take on certain powers.”

Our Senior Pastor, the Reverend Cooper McWhirter, was called to Grace Community Church in March of 2001. Previously, Pastor Cooper served as the Executive Pastor of Faith Presbyterian Church in Aurora, Colorado.

Pastor Cooper earned his Masters of Divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in May of 1991 and received his undergraduate degree from Westminster College, Fulton, Missouri. For twenty-five years he worked for a family business in Kansas City, Missouri serving as its president and principal owner for nine of those years.

Pastor Cooper was ordained as a Ruling Elder in the EPC in the fall of 1992. In this capacity, Cooper served as the Moderator of the Presbytery of the East in 1994. Cooper was then ordained as a Minister of the Word in the spring of 1996. In that capacity, Cooper served as the Moderator of the Presbytery of the West in 1999.

His wife, Sammie, has been very active in the EPC Women's Ministries in two presbyteries as well as in several local churches. The McWhirter's have two grown daughters, Anna Catherine and Margaret Mary.
