The title for this morning’s message comes by way of thanks to the United States Army for its recruitment ad which says,
“Be all that you can be!” It proved to be a huge success. In fact, the ad was so successful that several years ago I marched right down to the local recruiting center and tried to enlist! The recruiting sergeant took one look at me and said, “Which army? Whose side are you on, anyway? With all due respect, sir, we are not presently engaged in a world war, but perhaps you could start a victory garden for our war on terrorism.” I protested. Finally, in exasperation, the recruiting sergeant said, “Look, sir, you’re over age, over weight and over here. What we need are young men who can go over there and fight!” I left feeling dejected and rejected. And I said to myself, “Doesn’t anybody need someone whose older, and that the only thing he’s losing is his hair, and his teeth?”
