In the verses immediately preceding this morning’s passage, Jesus informed His disciples that upon their arrival in Jerusalem He would be delivered up to the chief priests and scribes who would condemn Him to death. He would then be handed over to the Roman authorities who would mock Him, spit upon Him, scourge Him, and put Him to death; even death on a cross.
